Origins of Curation
Since the 1960s, Taiwanese society has experienced the effects of industrialization and urbanization, causing a substantial increase in labor demand in the metropolitan areas, and the rural population has since then started to move towards the cities significantly. The indigenous people have begun to lose their tribal land due to capitalization and gradually sacrificed the mountains and fields that they heavily relied on survival. The decreasing employment opportunities have forced the indigenous people to move into the city successively under such a wave, hoping to work and increase their income to flip their lives. Nevertheless, the multiple oppression of economic, cultural, and social discrimination has confined most urban indigenous people to work in labor-intensive, high risk, and low-paid jobs.
Despite this, the tribal people are still determined to work hard for life. To date, there are nearly 70,000 urban indigenous people in Taoyuan, many of whom had moved to this place with their parents, plus the second- and third-generation indigenous people who were born here. Living and working happily here, they have generated a diverse race pattern and a thriving development of the city, inheriting the culture of Taoyuan’s new hometown in a new way.
